What is contraception?

Contraception, or “Birth Control”, describes methods one uses to prevent an unintended pregnancy.  There are a variety of different contraceptive options, all of which are not listed above.  Many of the options are not only preventing the fertilization of the egg by the sperm, but also beneficial in improving a woman’s Quality of life by various means, including by improving one’s menstrual cycles.

Important to note however, is that Contraceptives are very effective in preventing pregnancy, but most do not protect against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). Dr. Chisholm, for this reason, recommends the use of condoms if you have more than one sexual partner or are concerned over transmission of infection.

What are the available contraception services?

To help prevent unintended pregnancies, Dr. Chisholm offers a variety of contraceptive services, including the more popular birth control methods like:

Intrauterine device (IUD)

IUDs are available in multiple hormonal and non-hormonal forms.  These implantable devices fit inside the uterus to provide long-term, worry-free protection, BUT IMPORTANTLY, are easily reversible when the plan changes.  They have no long-term negative impact, are considered safe and very effective, and some have added non-contraceptive indications like treating heavy menses.  They range from 3-yr to 10-yr options and this can all be explained in further detail by sitting with Dr. Chisholm to see if they may be right for you.

Oral Birth Control Pills

Oral contraceptives (pills) contain both hormones, estrogen and progestin, or some with only progestin.  The right pill can be chosen for your particular circumstance and can usually benefit in ways other than prevention of pregnancy as well.  They work in various different ways and this too, can be discussed at your appointment.

A contraceptive implant is a thin rod that goes beneath the skin surface of your upper arm.  The rod releases a steady stream of the progestin hormone to prevent pregnancy and remains effective for multiple years.

Dr. Chisholm provides in-office placement and removal of the implant.

Injectable contraception is also available and can be discussed.

Tubal Sterilization

If your family is built already, or even if you plan to avoid building a family and want to avoid accidental occurrences, and do not want to rely on hormonal or other forms of contraception, Dr. Chisholm can discuss with you, the permanent form of “tube-tying” that is done as an outpatient procedure, and avoids any further need for other contraception.

Which method of contraception is right for me?

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to contraception.  Dr. Chisholm spends time reviewing your medical history, lifestyle, and birth control preferences to determine which method is right for you.  Factors that you should consider when choosing a contraceptive method include your:

  • Age
  • Family plans
  • Smoking history
  • Medical and and surgical histories
  • Lifestyle and sexual partners

Dr. Chisholm works closely with you to determine which method provides effective pregnancy protection based on your particular needs and how soon you want to start a family.  You also need to consider the convenience of each method. For instance, if you have difficulty remembering to take a pill every day, an implant or iud might be a better choice for you than the pill.

Likewise, if hormonal effects are detrimental or a nuisance to you, there are some alternatives that can be considered and discussed.
