What is High Risk Pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is any pregnancy that maternal or fetal health issues are present that could complicate or jeopardize the health of either the mother or child. These are dealt with in a very open-minded fashion with the proper counselling and referrals to manage and avoid any complications.

High risk pregnancies include a myriad of scenarios, however some of the main trouble areas that can be addressed are:

  •  Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Smoking history
  • And having a history of previous complicated, or high risk pregnancies

Dr. Chisholm will customize a high-risk pregnancy plan for your specific needs that may involve more frequent checkups, additional diagnostic testing, and a personalized labor and delivery plan to suit the needs of your particular pregnancy.

When should I schedule my first pregnancy consultation?

The earlier you begin prenatal checkups, the better it is for you and your baby.  Dr. Chisholm recommends scheduling a pregnancy consultation as early as 7 weeks, which is 7 weeks following the first day of your last period.  Of course, Dr. Chisholm will be happy to see you at any time, especially if you are concerned over an issue or needing assistance with anything, such as severe nausea and vomiting, bleeding, pains or just needing reassurance that everything is alright.  Dr. Chisholm recommends being on a prenatal vitamin before conceiving, however, if not, then as soon as you realize you are pregnant.  Any prenatal vitamin is good, but one with DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid) is strongly encouraged.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Chisholm reviews your medical history, previous pregnancies, and your existing health to customize your prenatal care plan.  At your follow-up visits, Dr. Chisholm monitors your health and your baby’s growth and development.  He will also keep you up to date on any recommended therapies or tests as your progress through the nine months.

You can expect to be seen routinely for prenatal exams about once every 4-6 weeks through 28 weeks, then the frequency changes to every 2-3 weeks through 36 weeks, then weekly until your healthy baby is in your arms.  Of course, the frequency and type of visits can be customized to fit the needs of your particular pregnancy.  The satisfaction of getting multiple ultrasounds at appropriate and meaningful times is assured as well, thus having the opportunity to get some pretty nice pictures of your new family member.
