Urinary Issues

What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence describes a loss of “bladder control”, resulting in leaking of urine.  This has multiple possible reasons for its occurrence and Dr. Chisholm can assist in figuring out why leakage is occurring and then providing some help in correcting this issue.  There are several types of urinary incontinence, but the two most common types that affect women include:

Stress incontinence

Stress incontinence describes urine leakage that occurs when pressure is put on the bladder, such as when one coughs, sneezes, lifts objects, runs, or even during sexual relations.  It is an anatomical issue that can be addressed in several ways.

Urge incontinence

Urge incontinence is an intense and sudden feeling that you MUST hit the restroom to empty your bladder, however the urge comes with little forewarning and the urge results with an inability to reach the restroom in time, with sudden loss of urine.

Women are more likely to develop urinary leakage than men due to anatomy differences, childbirth and also the natural effects of aging.  Urinary Incontinence can profoundly affect your daily life and discussing these issues with Dr. Chisholm might provide a way of reversing these effects.

When should I seek treatment for urinary incontinence?

You may be able to manage occasional leaks of urine by wearing pads and following a bathroom schedule to keep your bladder empty.

However, if urine leaks are frequent and disrupting your quality of life, you should schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Park Avenue Obstetrics and Gynecology and New Beginnings Feminine Beauty. Dr. Chisholm also recommends scheduling a consultation if urine leaks are interfering with your sex life or affecting your self-esteem.

Dr. Chisholm offers pelvic exams to evaluate your pelvic floor muscles and identify the underlying cause of your urinary incontinence. He might also request urine testing, an ultrasound, and other diagnostic testing to rule out infections and other medical issues that can affect the function of your bladder.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

If your urinary incontinence issues relate to weakness in your pelvic floor muscles, Dr. Chisholm can teach you pelvic floor exercises. Kegel and other exercises target the muscles in your pelvic floor that support your bladder and prevent urine leaks.

If exercises aren’t enough to stop urine leaks, you might benefit from Votiva vaginal revitalization treatments. Votiva technology uses radiofrequency energy to heat the tissues in your vaginal canal and stimulate new collagen growth. Collagen is an essential protein of healthy skin that firms up vaginal tissues to better support your bladder.

When urinary incontinence is severe, you might be a candidate for surgery to tighten your pelvic floor muscles. Surgery is also an option if you have pelvic floor prolapse, a condition where your reproductive organs fall into the vaginal canal because of muscle weakness. Dr. Chisholm can discuss your options for surgery based on the results of your diagnostic testing.
