Well Woman Exams

What is a well-woman exam?

This is your routine gynecological visit that you schedule, even if you are not sick or experiencing unusual symptoms or concerns. These exams should start in your teens or when you become sexually active.

Dr. Chisholm recommends that all women schedule well-woman exams at least once a year as part of a preventive health care plan. He takes the opportunity to evaluate your general health and the health and function of your reproductive system during your well-woman exam.

Again, this routine visit is a great time to address any questions or concerns about your health, your sex life, and your menstrual cycle. Dr. Chisholm can also help you choose the right contraception to prevent unintended pregnancies and discuss your family plans.

What can I expect during a well-woman exam?

During your well-woman exam, at Park Avenue Obstetrics and Gynecology and New Beginnings Feminine Beauty, Dr. Chisholm spends time reviewing your medical history and discussing factors in your life that affect your sexual health.  He also assesses your weight, height, and blood pressure before performing a pelvic exam to evaluate your reproductive organs.

Depending on your age and your sexual habits, you might need a pap smear to identify and screen for precancerous changes in your cervix that can increase your risk for cancer.  You might also need additional testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis.  Dr. Chisholm also offers complete STD panels to provide comfort in knowing you are free of any such diseases.

Dr. Chisholm also performs manual breast exams during your well-woman visit.  If you are over 40 or have risk factors for breast cancer, he can discuss your options for getting a mammogram.  Remember, ‘baseline’ mammograms are usually suggested at the age of 35.

Do I need blood work during a well-woman exam?

You may need blood work and/or other diagnostic testing as part of your routine exam, Dr. Chisholm will help address these potential needs at your visit.

If an issue is identified, or you have unexplained symptoms, i.e., pain, bleeding, pressure, discharge, irritation, he can request labs, urine testing or imaging to further evaluate these matters.
